Restaurant Homepage Design — The Most Important Page You Will Ever Build

Why the Homepage is the most important on a restaurant website

Your restaurant homepage design is doing one of two things right now. It is converting visitors into guests or it is sending them somewhere else. There is almost no middle ground. And the difference between a homepage that converts and one that does not almost always comes down to what the visitor sees in the first five seconds after the page loads.

85% of web visitors only visit the homepage. A large portion of those people make their decision about whether to stay or leave before they ever scroll. Your restaurant web page design either captures them immediately or loses them to the next result on Google.

The First Five Seconds of Your Restaurant Homepage Design

In the first five seconds, a visitor to your homepage needs to answer three questions without having to think about it. What kind of restaurant is this? Does it look like somewhere I want to eat? How do I order or make a reservation?

If your restaurant web page design makes someone hunt for any of those answers, you are losing them. The visual quality of the hero image or video answers the first two questions instantly. The action buttons, call now, order online, and catering, answer the third one.

A video in the hero section with people in it is the gold standard for restaurant homepage design. There is an almost self fulfilling prophecy at work. Show an empty restaurant and the restaurant feels empty. Show a full room with happy guests and the restaurant feels like the place to be. If a video is not possible, a photo of your staff with the food achieves something powerful in its own right. A guest walks in and recognizes the bartender from the website. The relationship has already started before they sat down.

What Never Belongs on a Restaurant Homepage

The single most common restaurant web page design mistake I see is the life story on the homepage. We came from Italy in 1983. Our family has been in the restaurant business for three generations. Our chef trained under a James Beard award winner. All of that is genuinely valuable. None of it belongs on the homepage.

The person landing on your homepage is hungry. They are not reading. They are scanning for three things: what kind of food, how to get it, and whether it looks worth their time. The about us story belongs on the about us page, which should be rich with heritage, history, and personality for the guests who want to go deeper after they have already decided they are coming in.

As we explored in our post on analyzing a restaurant website and marketing strategy, the restaurants with the strongest homepage designs put the guest's needs first and the owner's story second.

The Phone Number on Every Page

This sounds obvious and most restaurants still do not do it. A call button at the top of every single page of your restaurant website. Not just the homepage. The cocktail page. The catering page. The about us page. Wherever a guest is on your site, they should be able to call you in one tap. This single element of restaurant homepage design directly determines how many inbound calls your website generates.

At 5 Loaves Restaurant Consulting, our restaurant website design service builds every site around the homepage as the primary conversion tool.
