How Much Should You Tip?
Tipping customs vary by service, but here are the current US standards:
Sit-down restaurant: 18–20% is now the standard baseline. 15% used to be acceptable but is increasingly considered low. For exceptional service — great recommendations, attentive without hovering, handled a large or complicated table — 25% is appropriate.
Bar tab: 18–20% of the total, or $1–2 per drink for simple rounds at a busy bar.
Hair salon / haircut: 18–20% of the service total. Tip your stylist directly, not through the front desk unless the salon explicitly tells you it goes to the stylist.
Nail salon: 18–20%. Cash tips are strongly preferred — credit card tips at nail salons don't always go directly to the technician.
Massage / spa: 18–20% of the service price. Standard even for medical or therapeutic massage at a spa setting.
Food delivery: 15–20% of the order total, with a $3–5 minimum. Delivery drivers use their own vehicles, pay their own gas, and often earn below minimum wage on base pay alone.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): 15–20%. In-app tipping is easy and goes 100% to the driver.
Takeout: Optional. 10% if someone spent time assembling a complex order. Not expected for simple pickup.
Buffet: 10% — service is limited, but someone is still clearing your plates and refilling drinks.
Coffee shop / counter service: Optional. $1–2 if someone made a specialty drink for you. Not expected for a simple drip coffee hand-off.
How to Split a Bill with Tip
Add the tip to the total first, then divide. Don't split the pre-tip bill and tip separately — it gets confusing and someone always ends up undertipping.

Should You Tip on the Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Amount?
Technically, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is correct — your server didn't provide the sales tax, the government did. In practice, most people tip on the post-tax total and the difference is small. On a $60 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% on the post-tax total ($64.80) vs the pre-tax total ($60) is a $0.96 difference. Tip on whichever you prefer — your server will appreciate either.
